Sleepless in Kennewick

New wdogmedia.com site is up, that’s nice. We push plone and now we have a plone layout.

I fixed plone on my own computer so I can work on development while at Hyak now, I’ll feel more productive at any rate. I’ve decided that thestepsmovie.com is going to require a completely custom plone template, and I’d also like to prove to Ben and anyone else that I can do such a thing. I want to integrate forums and the like as well as places for a lot in the way of information on the movie(s) into the site and plone just seems a good choice for that.

FastServers (powersurge) is not being totally friendly at the moment, we’d really like to get more RAM, and they really don’t want to give us more without us going into a higher end server. I figure at some point we’ll need to look into other options for more memory as we just eat that up with database applications.

My watch’s battery gave up completely today, got it replaced, but it was over an hour behind this morning.

Joy is very very sick so I took over some transport duties for Bob’s mother who visits them every Sunday.

Lindsey passed microbiology with a C, it’s a hard class.

And so sums up my day.

Well, I should comment that I basically can’t get to sleep here is why I have the subject as such, not sure why.

Wandered Home?

Filed under: Film, Travel — jmac @ 1:22 am

I’m in Kennewick again, couldn’t resist the call of an internet connection.

Checked out the new convention center here that was open today, hamburgers for $2, free pop, free danish things, and best of all, free really high speed internet access either with wireless (as I did) or wired. I was the only one taking advantage of that that I could see.

Wandered around with iStumbler running and met with the curiosity of the event coordinator. Talked with her for a bit.

Watched Spartan, it’s an interesting movie, it wasn’t great but it was worth seeing. I’d give it a reccomendation anyway.

I was intending to finish up on yesterday’s blog entry tonight, but I decided to clip most of it from there and present it as a complete essay at a time in the future.

No auto feature to put what’s playing, but Linkin Park - In The End is playing.

Why?

Filed under: Film — jmac @ 1:59 am

I have just completed what is possibly one of the saddest books I have ever read.

I posted today on 11th edition some comments on Spider-man, most specifically that I always appreciate the troubled hero. I feel they are more real to me. Of course the hero succeeds in their goal, the city, the world, the universe, whatever is saved, but the costs are great, terribly great.

[EDIT: this post was several pages longer and I have removed them and will include them in a more formalized format here or somewhere else at a later time]

Stuff Works

Filed under: Life — jmac @ 1:59 am

Life proceeds. A window is now in the deck so soon it may be enclosed again, I had started to doubt my prediction of 2 weeks, but we seem to be back on that schedule. I just don’t work well with people named Joe it seems or the like, I dunno. He’s doing the job very well as far as I can tell, just not very quickly.

Nick is not doing well, and I’m a bit fed up with it, I tried to explain to Ben today that he wasn’t always like this. My memory is really poor though in general, this morning (1am ish?) or late last night I was recruiting writers for articles on 11thedition.com and suggested since the first season of Enterprise had just ended Nick could write a recap of it. I was quickly informed that this was the 3rd season.

Met an interesting person today, very fired up about an idea he has, etc etc etc. Seems to know what he’s doing, but alas I have seen far too many people in exactly the same mindset as he is in right now that I have trouble doing any more than telling him “Good Luck!” and helping him out with some bits of Exchange server… bits I had never even heard off but that Mail.app was kind enough to have incorporated recently and that I think I was able to slightly explain to him. I’m not the best teacher at any time, let alone while I’m avoiding computers, and he was not the best of students, especially while he was very preoccupied with how he thought things worked. Oh well. I do wish him luck.

Everything is up with no server problems, this is how things _should_ run, it’s nice really.

Everything for the steps: one also seems to be falling into place, however I am very tempted to take money earmarked for it to buy myself a new camera… that aside though, if Ben finally decides he’s completely happy with his decision on lead actress I think it’ll all go smoothly, as smoothly as any independent film can go that is.

Not Much

Filed under: Life — jmac @ 1:59 am

Finished the third book last night, Wilson came this morning with a couple more books and various food supplies. There are about 5 flies within my personal space at the moment which is quite annoying, and I itch from mosquito bites and a slight sunburn to the tip of my nose I think.

Random Quote
“No, I want you to try. For the sake of those millions of worlds, billions of cultures, and quadrillions of people. Not for the Emperor. Not for Demerzel. For humanity.”
“I will fail, “ said Seldon.
“Then we will be no worse off. Will you try?”
And against his will and not knowing why, Seldon heard himself say, “I will try.” And the course of his life was set.

Reading

Filed under: Life — jmac @ 1:59 am

Attempted to sleep in, failed, continued reading Asimov’s Empire series, I had read the first book but seem to have failed to read the following 2.

Synced the iPod and took it, some headphones, and a camp chair down to lake Keetchelus to listen to music and catch a bit of sun. A couple tents were setup and a few kids were wading in life jackets, it seemed from my limited observation that they had no intention of going out to swim, or of following the instructions of the older child or adults. I stayed there until 12:30 and came back for lunch.

Finished reading the second book in the Empire series (which it strikes me as odd in that I believe they were written in the opposite order, 1950 was the third, 1951 the second, and 1952 the first. Which probably doesn’t matter since they only exist in the same thousand year or so period in the same universe, or quite possibly even more than that. I am reading them according to the timeline though instead of the writing order.

Joe has most of the deck put together now, basically all but the windows I think, it’s certainly better constucted than it was before. Only major problem is that there are no screens yet, and so having the interior windows open to facilitate construction (cables, music, etc) has allowed a LOT of flies, mosquitos, crane flies, etc in which are plaguing me as I write. I’ve killed most of the mosquits now but have suffered a fair number of bites.

Third book, here I come.

Adventure at Hyak

Filed under: Travel — jmac @ 1:59 am

Got up at 8 as I figured the guy doing the deck would get an earlyish start, he didn’t so I took a nap after putting groceries out of the cooler into the refrigerator.

At noon I went driving, found the tunnel entrance, poked around Hyak Estates which was all dirt road last I remember but is now quite built up and more houses are going in.

Lake Keetchelus is down quite a bit, but higher than I’ve seen recently. The road to the second boat launch (on an island of sorts) I believe has been built up as it’s now above water a bit. The parking on the island is partly submerged though.

Headed to Lake Kachees (sp) which is farther out than I remembered, it’s even lower, but there were a few people putting in and taking out boats, and some rubber rafts out, and some picnicers, and some jet skis so it was fairly busy.

Took a road I had never been on, past Alpental, think it said I needed a permit but Not sure, most of those that’s to park. Found Denny Creek Campground, a place to buy firewood at $3 a bundle which I will probably grab prior to leaving, and an unnamed Picnic Area.

Took Tinkham Rd. which is a packed dirt/large gravel forest service road. Some people were camping on it and a fair bit of traffic really, mostly big pickups but also a Lincoln Towncar. Tried to take some photos, but found out my camera has hit the end of it’s lifespan it seems, the gears that change apeture seem to be worn and so it was having a lot of trouble with digital compensation going to max (black) then dying and shutting off and going to pure white. All the while clicking away and whirring. It caught enough that I got a couple pictures of foxglove, but generally they are all _WAY_ overexposed.

Grabbed Wilson’s gamera and hiked up the ski slope at Hyak, took a circular route, up the big red chair (chair 1) to the base of the yellow chair (chair 2?) to the small red chair. Got some great pictures of flowers and other things but was disappointed to be out of breath after a bit of a jog up to the road, I’m in decent shape, but jogging on loose gravel/plants up hill seems to be too much.

Joe came and was getting setup to work when I got back (4:30ish) figuring he could work for 4 hours in cooler weather. He seems quite competent at any rate. He moved the wood out so there’s some walking space now.

I transfered 74 photos over to the computer, and I was saying last week that I wanted a new camera but can’t afford it at the moment and mine wasn’t going to die anyway… oh well, guess I really do need to start looking.

I’m GONE!

Filed under: Travel — jmac @ 3:51 pm

I’m leaving for a week or more.

11th Edition is my most recent site, it’s a user based news site like slashdot (same codebase).

I’ll post to my blog while I am gone, but not upload since I won’t have access.

Useless link of the day

Filed under: Uncategorized — jmac @ 5:50 pm

stamen: google news is a software project designed to track in real time the popularity of news items based on how many are listed on Google News and display this information in a graph.

Check it out, it’s much more interesting in person.

Other news?

Filed under: Uncategorized — jmac @ 3:15 pm

So many other blogs actually cover subject matter that, well, matters. Then though I’d feel either the need to separate out my personal stuff or have 2 blogs or something, not to mention feeling the need to actually have an audience. Still a tempting idea though, not sure how many readers followed me to this address, did I get all 5 of you yet?

I might tag something onto theendhascome.com anyway which is my new general purpose domain, that coreblog can allow me to e-mail in articles is very tempting, I could in theory write them on my phone.

Anyway, if anyone reads this URL, be interested in comments.
