Mal’s Song

Filed under: Film — jmac @ 12:19 am

Rob came across this a couple of days ago, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHDYdg3X_BE

Definitely worth seeing. I tracked down a torrent of the full sized over the past few days I managed to get it without actually ever seeing a seeder. I’ve uploaded it to http://blog.jmaclabs.com/MalsSong_hi.mov it’s 48.2MB but I’ll keep it there as long as bandwidth doesn’t kill me.

The band that did the song has a site at http://cyphertext.net/escapekey/ worth checking out.

Happy Apple Experience

Filed under: Computers — jmac @ 7:07 pm

Well, avid readers of my blog will probably be more used to my series of complaints dealing with my macbook(s).
Couple days ago my power adapter was having issues. Yesterday it was about 50/50 chance it would work when plugged in. This morning it wouldn’t work. I was planning on making this trip on battery, possibly borrowing a charger up here (know 2 people here that have macbooks). But, when I hit Kennewick I decided I really should buy a new adapter and recalled there was a reseller in the area. Resellers in my experience are … limited in how they deal with Apple warranties for computers they didn’t sell.
So, I walk in and ask for a power adapter for a macbook and am a bit disturbed by the rather high price ($22 over ordering it from Apple) and make some comment about wishing I had time to wait for warranty service. The woman asks if I have the adapter and macbook with me and that they would be happy to process it under warranty for me. Well, this is rather nice, so I go grab my bag and present everything.

Being half asleep and standing at the counter I thank them profusely for dealing with the service, and rant a bit about my recent struggles. Oh, I need an LCD inverter? Yeah, can put in an order, should be able to get one in tomorrow, will take about an hour to install it. Anyway, that makes me very happy, but I still nearly fell asleep at the counter.

So, if you are in the Tri-cities, check out Alpha Computer in Richland. Tiny shop, but great service so far. (hey, anyone willing to even entertain fixing my computer is great in my mind, if they do it tomorrow I will consider setting up a cult to worship them)

More Tanzania Photos

Filed under: Photography, Tanzania — jmac @ 2:26 pm

Still sorting out old Tanzania photos to be able to both take a few with me on this trip and have enough storage for new ones.

Came across this. Godwin is running in the background of a student portrait. I don’t know if that is my laptop, but that black cable is connected to my firewire CF card reader.

Playing with light

Filed under: Photography — jmac @ 10:36 am

Couldn’t sleep last night (that’s the normal state of affairs). Last night, though, I also had my camera and cell phone and thought that the oak of my headboard made a nice backdrop.

The following were 30 second exposures at f/5.6. All illumination is from the cell phone, I lit up the background by holding it out of frame with the LCD light aimed toward the background. The blue streaks are the keypad, the white are the LCD.

Photo Pruning

Filed under: Life — jmac @ 12:57 am

Some of you know that I am a bit of a photo packrat… numbers like 75GB have been tossed around before.

Well, in preparation for a long trip to TZ with the need to free up space on my 4 hard drives, I am making a comprehensive effort to delete worthless photos. This will be followed up by a comprehensive to locate and delete duplicate files.

Thought this photo was funny. Normally I’d include a photo using a better technique than the following, but it’s 2am.

Back to Hyak (again)

Tip: Tape over the reset buttons on user accessible routers, even the ones that take a paperclip to push. Someone resetting the flash memory of a router 200 miles away is not fun.
