Morning 4

Filed under: Tanzania — jmac @ 11:25 pm

Still working on networking.

Mostly unpacked now, the server I sent had some problems in transit that I have mostly repaired, worked around, or bypassed. I’m not sure if I will consider it stable enough to leave for a year, though. We’ll see in a few months.

Network is starting to take shape, even though no one seems to notice. It doesn’t provide internet access (yet) as that isn’t the primary goal. But that’s what everyone looks for. “Can I get online?”

Anyway, rather tired, a bit sun burned, and not sure if this is day 4 or 5 to be honest. It’s 9:24am 30 June 2007 here. Someone else can work out the math.

Morning 2

Filed under: Tanzania — jmac @ 10:02 pm

Not much to say, busy day yesterday. Prime Minister’s wife is coming to take a tour on or around a week from Saturday so I need to have something to show then. Planning to do an ad-hoc type network almost exclusively in the elementary school, but with phones over to the admin building. Also going to try to get Cecil (the server I sent) up and running with a monitor and Edubuntu installed and as much of the Swahili language software as I have. Can’t hurt.

The youth group here did puppet shows and the like yesterday. I mostly worked on the routers so photos are limited.

(Yes, to answer the question, it is 8am here)

and routers are starting to appear around the campus.

There is also a teenage type group doing children’s ministries during the conference.

Hello, Amsterdam

Filed under: Tanzania, Travel — jmac @ 11:23 pm

Basically uneventful flight, fair amount of turbulence, though, ended up with my tea in my lap at one point.

Leaving here in a couple of hours, internet access today is €16 which is absolutely ridiculous.

Packing For Departure

Filed under: Tanzania — jmac @ 12:01 pm

Last day to pack, heading up to Hyak and the like in the morning.

Nothing going hugely wrong yet, just inconveniences and lack of sleep. Even have extra toothpaste ready to go.

Server Drive Overhaul

Filed under: Work — jmac @ 2:18 am

Overhauled the Xen layout, backups, etc. Killed about 100GB in junk.

This shouldn’t overly affect anyone.

Packing (TZ1)

Filed under: Tanzania — jmac @ 9:40 pm

This is the first of my 2007 Tanzania Trip posts. I post because I have started the process of packing today. Departure will be 25 June and return will be on about 20 September.

Replacement for my damaged CF card, and also a new camera bag (Lowepro Slingshot 200AW) will be here Wednesday. Still need to get my driver’s license renewed next week and a tetanus booster, but I’m close to ready.

For those new here, the Tanzania section over on the right will contain the Tanzania specific entries in the blog. It also has previous posts, including the router config process in Feburary (they all arrived safely about 8 weeks ago) and also previous entries on the ground.

CF Card Failure

Filed under: Photography — jmac @ 11:04 pm

I have 3 CF cards, 1 2GB and 2 1GB cards. I always carry my laptop with me and then have various (mostly 250GB Hitachi) external hard drives.

My mother asked where photos from my aunt and uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary were, and I honestly didn’t know. I’d formatted all three cards this morning after taking photos off of them, but I hadn’t seen them. When it came to that, I couldn’t find the photos I’d shot today, and I knew which card those were on… coincidence? After much effort I did recover most of the photos.
My 2GB card gets the most use (hey, it doesn’t fill up as fast) and was the first to fail. I figure it has had 8,000 images shot on it in 2 years. Better it failed now than in Tanzania.
Lexar has a lifetime warranty on their professional series cards, which requires proof of purchase to claim as it is non-transferable. I can’t find it off hand, so am just ordering a couple of new cards (133x trumps 80x anyway) and will deal with warranty service on it when I get back.

All in all, a bit of an annoyance.

2007 Gregg Family Portraits

Filed under: Photography — jmac @ 11:36 pm

Shot some rather quick family portraits of the Gregg clan for my Aunt and Uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary. Haven’t done any post processing on them yet.

Plight of the Insomniac

Filed under: Life — jmac @ 5:19 am

Few people realize that this problem actually exists. No, I’m not talking insomnia in general, everyone deals with sleeplessness from time to time. True insomniacs have the opportunity to truly define the struggle I wish to discuss today.

When does tomorrow start?

Well, that is slightly inaccurate, I, like several people I know consider the time between Midnight (local time zone) and the time I fall asleep to be “Tomorrow”. Today then starts when I wake up in the morning.

No, what I am speaking of is the question of “When do I give up on trying to sleep and grab a cup of coffee?”

For many this question is answered by someone else, aka “The Boss” who gives ultimatums like “Be at work at 8AM SHARP or don’t come in at all!” which provides a 7am (depending on traffic) decision point on the eternal question of when to stop trying to sleep.

Others have a more difficult time, but most of us have to deal with this on weekends. Is there an arbitrary time when when should transition from attempt-to-sleep mode to where’s-the-coffee? 6, 7, 8, 9am? Does it vary based on first light? Or perhaps sunrise? If sunrise, how does an overcast day effect things?

Today it’s 6:16am and I just got out of the shower, which is a great place to think up blog posts like this. I still haven’t decided if it was a relaxing hot shower to help me fall asleep for a couple of hours, or a luke-warm shower to wake me up to face the day. (OK, actually the plumbing couldn’t decide that, and I don’t remember what the goal was). Dawn has broken somewhere, but I don’t think the sun has risen yet. So, I lay between the darkness and the light or something to that effect. (Apologies both to the creators of Babylon 5 and Terry Pratchett, both of whom have incorporated similar lines in their works, and I do recommend the Discworld series to anyone who can read).

The more industrious side of me would really, really like to start packing as I’m leaving Thursday morning. The rest of me would very much like to fall asleep. I’m going to try the latter for another half-hour.
