New Construction

So, I like that they are putting in 5 new houses around me. I’ll have some neighbors… but…

They broke a water pipe and so I had no water some of today.

The backhoe gives me a terrible headache and appears to be why I’ve been feeling lousy today.

There be (fish) food here.

Filed under: Aquarium — jmac @ 2:47 pm

Ah, finally, my fish have some life food to supplement their various freeze dried and granulated fare. After a couple of delays 3 bags of daphnia have arrived and are in buckets multiplying.

The Daphnia magna did best in the shipping and so I threw about half of them in with the fish the morning they arrived. The tetras were too busy spawning to notice but the little platys tried very hard to eat daphnia that were bigger than their heads.

Firewire Hubs? Who needs firewire hubs?

I’ve been plagued recently by the lack of firewire 400 (IEEE 1394a) ports on my iMac. To the point of considering getting  a hub… the concept of a hub for firewire annoys me by it’s very nature since firewire is supposed to be daisy chained.

At any rate, my newer external drive enclosures are FW800/400/USB and have 2 FW800, 1 FW400, and 1 USB port on the back. I’d read in a comment on a post by Chase Jarvis that someone had daisy chained the new LaCie drives (1FW800, 1FW400, 1USB) by connecting to the 800 and then adding the second drive to the 400.

Long story short, I now have extra FW400 ports down where my drive arrays live (top shelf below my desk on my left) which is where I  tend to keep my FW400 CF card reader. I even have the open port on my desk from the iMac itself. Life is glorious.

To Boise I Go!

In a foolhardy trip suggested by my mother, I (and my mother) are going to take my cousin’s desk and pick up my bed (going to another cousin since I’ve replaced it in the mean time) and my desk. In Boise. In the same day. In a van.

In praise of Aperture

Posting on behalf of John, as he appears to have broken the internet.  Aperture 2.0 gets the JMac seal of approval.

Photo Of The Day (has moved)

Filed under: Photography — jmac @ 10:11 pm

Flickr has always annoyed me. Yes, I realize there are a lot of huge fans of it out there… but I’m not one.

So, embracing slightly more anyway I’m now a PhotoShelter subscriber and will be moving to a photoswhenIfeellikepostingmaybedaily PhotoOfTheDay.

You can reach it via several means:

Minor Corys

Well, the Cory cats (Corydoras aeneus) actually managed to stop chasing each other around the tank long enough to actually lay some eggs. This was, of course, while my blog was down.

The Serpae Tetras (Hyphessobrycon callistus) proceeded to go into a bit of a frenzy each time they found a clump. After a fair bit of indecision on if I actually wanted to deal with small catfish, I put the remaining 8 eggs into a floating container with holes. I have no proper tanks setup (nor, honestly, do I really want to go about setting them up right now) for young fish… so they’ll just have to float for a while.

RAID Joys

Those who have been on AIM or Jabber the last couple of days have probably heard my full frustration with my multiple RAID failures over the past few days. At any rate, the replacement drives are here, the data from the failed drives has been recovered. As it looks to be a software (rather than hardware) failure in the RAID system I’ve chosen to keep using the old drives.

22 days to rebuild
