So, I’ll admit, I was somewhat looking forward to Microsoft’s $300 million ad campaign with Gates and Seinfeld. Not really because I expected to be hugely swayed by the arguments but because I thought the goal was direct competition with Apple’s Mac v. PC ads… which are funny.
Well, first one last week:
It was 3x as long as the Mac v. PC ads and didn’t actually have any sort of competition… but, I came very close to laughing at a couple of points. I didn’t laugh, but I came very close.
This week:
9x longer than the Mac v. PC ads. I intellectually thought of laughing at a couple of what I was able to realize were jokes… they just weren’t funny.
Now, I’m not going to weigh in on if this ad is effective at whatever Microsoft’s goal is. But… I was hoping with Seinfeld and Gates it would be funny. I was disappointed.

The only funny line in either of those is near the end of the second one, “You’re not so real.” But other than that, they’re both truly awful. I’m not a big fan of “Mac vs. PC” either, but at least they’re actually advertising something.

I guess you have to be a fan of the Seinfeld show. Well even then it wasn’t really funny. Lets face it Bill Gates is not and can’t be a funny guy.
