SPR site

Since I’ve just finished up working today I figured I’d post about it. Lately I’ve been putting time into a website for a real estate company. I’ve learned to dislike MLS companies. Anyway this is also an excuse to figure out how to post links from the iPhone.
The test server is (link removed) (forgot that there is no user bits yet, and would rather people not overly mutilate the database)

Another Update

Wilson is home, and doing reasonably well. He want into the ER and was admitted with a blood clot in his leg after getting home, though. Too much time with legs down and no movement in the car on the way home.

I’m trying to get out from under all the work that piled up in the last couple of weeks… I feel like I’m drowning. And, of course, more work had to get assigned today.

That’s really about the sum of my life for a bit, I’m at least over the respiratory infection that had me down in the 2 weeks before Wilson went into the hospital.

24 hours downtime

Filed under: Computers, Work — jmac @ 2:12 am

First significant (more than a couple of minutes) downtime in 201 days has now concluded at 24 hours. All of which I worked. Nothing like a phone call at 2am and then 25 hours of work on 1.5 hours of sleep…

Yeah…

Server Drive Overhaul

Filed under: Work — jmac @ 2:18 am

Overhauled the Xen layout, backups, etc. Killed about 100GB in junk.

This shouldn’t overly affect anyone.

Back to Hyak (again)

Filed under: Computers, Work — jmac @ 7:35 am

Tip: Tape over the reset buttons on user accessible routers, even the ones that take a paperclip to push. Someone resetting the flash memory of a router 200 miles away is not fun.

The Joy of Checks

Filed under: Work — jmac @ 10:47 pm

There’s a reason I dislike taking checks.

Quick recount of the checks over the past week:

2 are a month late
1 that was expected was not there
1 overpaid
1 appears to have split amounts between 2 people’s work incorrectly and sent it all to me
1 was to a company in Michigan, which is conveniently PO Box 158 in zip 48068 (4s on a varied background that checks often have does appear as a 9 pretty easily, especially when the check is say, covered in dark blue spots)

When you tally postage on late invoices, time spent on the phone dealing with it, and everything else… Well, that 3% credit card fee suddenly seems so reasonable.

Hyakdev.com redesign

For the overly curious, we are restructuring the hyak*.com domains.

Voicemail Oops

Filed under: Computers, Work — jmac @ 1:22 pm

Well, there seems to be a new bug in the phone system. The main box has 101 new messages today. Guessing at some sort of loop… At least it didn’t come in on an 800 number. The odd bit, it doesn’t show up on any other call log either.

Oh well…. so much fun for the new year.

It works…

Filed under: Computers, Work — jmac @ 2:51 am

I post this message from behind the OLSR network here.

The funny thing is that I know people must have implemented exactly what I want to do before, but I can’t find anything on it. So, I’m flying a bit blind, but I have it mostly working, sans a lot of features I want to get in.

I’ll document it all when it works. Wifidog is up too.

Hyak Network

Filed under: Computers, Work — jmac @ 2:40 am

Picked up 2 more Buffalo routers today, flashed one to OpenWRT, will flash the other tomorrow. If this works, that will give me 4 locations with routers, one at each corner of the building.

I’ve also chosen OLSR instead of WDS. In part because I like it better, and in part because I want more experience working with it.

I’ve also decided to go with a donation based system. Equipment cost was about $275, monthly it’s about $80. Now, I’m the one using a fair portion of that monthly cost, but other users will diminish my capacity to some degree, and the other equipment is unecessary in general.

If I add the wifi based phone in the lobbyish area, that’s another $200, but all equipment I have on hand.

Going to suggest a $5/day or $15/month donation, I think, but not block anyone not paying, unless their use is ridiculous.

I’ll add another post tomorrow (ok, later today) with how things are going.
